Upcoming Reddit Ask Me Anything on June 14th

Rosemary

Some of you, on reading the title above, are going, “Excellent!”

Others are going, “Say what now?”

For people in the second group: Ask Me Anything (aka AMA) is a question and answer session conducted via the Reddit website.  Check out their Wikipedia entry for a more exhaustive background on Reddit’s history and mission, but here are some of the more  cogent aspects:

  1. Reddit is huge.
  2. It’s a discussion and aggregation website.
  3. It’s basically structured as a good ol’ online bulletin board.  Remember them?  No fancy graphics, no slick interface!  It’s what you say that counts, not how pretty your post looks.
  4.  It’s very wide-ranging.   It covers a lot of subjects, and they branch off into “subreddits.” (I’ll be on the /r/fantasy subreddit. )
  5. It’s the fourth most visited website on the Internet.  Yes, I said the fourth.

A lot of cool people have done AMA’s.  Here’s the raw list of previous /r/fantasy AMA’s. Pick a name, click on it — and it’s like you were right there when it was happening.  (Here’s a somewhat prettier list with upfront come-on blub, courtesy of Tor.com.)

I’m really excited about this.  It’s an honor to be invited!

I’m also a bit nervous.  It’s live, answer-as-it’s-asked.

Still I have a pretty good idea of what some of the questions will be, so I can prep myself beforehand.

On the day the AMA goes live, I’ll post the link here, on Facebook, and on Twitter.  You should stop by!  I’m planning to do it in the evening when most people in North America are home from work.  People in other hemispheres: alas, the world is round.  You’ll just  have to stay up late, if you’re in Europe, or get up early if you’re in India.

    Yay!
I thought one can usually post questions for AMAs a few hours in advance, in case one doesn’t have time while it’s live? That would be convenient.

    • Rosemary Says:

Actually, they told me to create my account on the same day, with a note saying at what time I’ll be going live. I think that once I do that, you can drop in a question right away, but I won’t be replying until later. How’s that?

  • Laura Says:

I can already tell you my question: do you have a timeline of when book 5 might come out, and if so, when will that be? 🙂

    • Rosemary Says:

      Laura —

Yeah, that’s one question I think I’ll see a lot.

It’s hard to pin down the answer to that this point, because it depends on a whole bunch of factors — including whether I self-publish, or go back to the traditional publishing route.

I’ll have a better idea of what’s up in September or October.

  • Joshua Smith Says:

Whenever I see one of these, I always have to resist the urge to ask how many licks it takes to get to the Tootsie Roll® center of a Tootsie Pop®.

  • Paul A. Says:

An “Ask Me Anything” seems strangely appropriate.

A steerswoman’s knowledge is shared with any who request it; no steerswoman may refuse a question, and no steerswoman may answer with anything but the truth…

  • Rosemary Says:

It does, doesn’t it? I’ve got to the point were every now and then I sort of mumble, “What exactly have I just got myself into?”

Well. Like a steerswoman, I will answer with the truth, but unlike a steerswoman, there exist questions to which I would answer, “None of your beeswax!” But those would only be questions of a very rude and personal sort! Which none of my readers would ever even ask me, because they are all wonderful, intelligent, considerate human beings.

  • Terry Says:

So, even if you are undetermined about how to publish Book 5, could you give an idea of how far along it is now? E.g., 1st draft 80% done or final draft 50% fine tuned? I know I’ve become quite discouraged at times over the long wait and lack of info about it.

    • Rosemary Says:

      Terry —

I’m sorry you’re discouraged — this is as frustrating for me as it is for my readers! Working on this book as been a mish-mash of rewriting, redesigning, rethinking, splitting one book into two, going down the wrong path, throwing out thousands of pretty but useless words …

I’ll be able to answer your question more clearly at the end of September. That’s about the most I can say, right now.
